Why Polygamy?

The question is often asked: Why did God command Joseph Smith to enact the practice of polygamy, or multiple wives. The answer is sometimes given that it was for God to raise up righteous seed. to increase the number of children born in the gospel covenant in order to “raise up seed unto [the Lord]”
